Tyrannosaurus Rex 2 was a short produced by Ted Phillips with Our Movie Productions. The short used stop-motion animation and panoramic backgrounds, but also featured Ted's earliest use of scene change. It was recorded on VHS-C format media in May 1995, but was not edited or released to the public until December 28, 2008.

History

The tyrannosaur figure was part of a prop loan from Richard Falantano and was returned after principal photography. Our Movie Productions dissolved just days after making Tyrannosaurus Rex 2. The director, Ted Phillips, retained the rights to this short. When Cracked Egg Studios announced plans in 2008 to publish their media library online, Ted Phillips agreed to lease the short to them for its inclusion.

Dating this Short

For many years, this short was dated as produced in November 1992, based on its position on Ted's Tape in relation to other shorts which were long believed to have been produced earlier that year. However, further research into Ted's Tape in 2022 and recent years moved the dating of that tape several months later and placed this as being recorded in May 1993.

On March 23, 2024, a review of other historical documents while building studio history timelines, led Ted Phillips to review the Biography on Theodore Phillips and Other People, which included an entry dated February 26, 1995, during which Teddy Phillips states that his favorite early work was Ern and Vern vs King Kong, which was actually the name of an announced sequel that was never produced for Vern and Ernie vs the Boogey Man. Since other records, such as 1998's Ted's Fun Site, show that Teddy commonly misremembered the names of his early works, he most likely meant that his favorite work was actually Vern and Ernie vs the Boogey Man. However, since that work was partially recorded over by Tyrannosaurus Rex 2, this created suspicion over the 1993 dating. Further review of the source footage of Tyrannosaurus Rex 2 revealed outtakes where puppeteers Nick Phillips and Ted Phillips are visible on screen, and they look comparatively years older than their appearance in the live-action Vern and Ernie vs the Boogey Man.
